Rural Institute was established by Government of India to promote rural developments and education in Engineering, Public Health, Agriculture and Humanities.  The Tavanur campus was initiated by Mr. K. Kelappan, a Gandhian, freedom fighter and activist popularly known as Kerala Gandhi.  Tavanur Rural Institute was established in 1963 and it was renamed as Kelappaji College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology under Government of Kerala in 1976.
Kelappaji was the governing Vice Chairman,  A Sankara Pillai- Director, P.K. Thampan – Principal (Faculty of Agriculture) and  Ravindra- Farm Superintendent in the early years.  The college was blessed with several well known  educationists and  lectures such as Thayattu Sankaran, P.N. Moosad, Jacob, Mammen and etc..

The Alumni of faculty of agriculture from 1964 – 1975 united to celebrate 50 plus years of their life in Tavanur and service to humanity .  Many graduates  have served in the Government of Kerala as Agriculture Officer, Assistant District Director, Block Development Officers and Veterinary Officers. Few served in Government of India in ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) , AIR ( All India Radio), Department of Agriculture, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and abroad in the United States of America.  Many of the Alumnus have their children working abroad in the Middle East, Europe, USA and major IT companies in India.

The then farm workers and their families became a vital part of Tavanur and nearby towns.  Their dedication in developing the Rural Institute Farm lead   to establish  modern farming in Ponnani , Tirur, Kuttipuram and nearby villages.  Many children of the  farm workers and students   became IT  and management experts  works overseas and bought glory and wealth to the region.

Third Alumni Meet  October 26, 2017

The third Alumni meet was over whelmed with  the presents of delegates from all over Kerala state and abroad.  The event was blessed with the presents of Professors, lectures and staff of Rural  Institute from the 70’s.  The organizing committee was headed by Pulipra Unneenkutty- Chairman, Sukapuram Radhakrishnan- General Convener, K N Mohanan- Treasurer and a 25 member committee.

The following from the first batch also played a major role in coordinating the event on October 26, 2018 at Tavanur.  Sathyanathan  Thumboli (AIR, Calicut),  Janardanan C.K. (Ponnani), Gopi C A (Chembankulam Pharmacy, Kumily)      and  Abdul Rahman ( Rtd. Agriculture Officer, Andaman) .  Every attendees highlighted the event with their esteemed presents.  Among alumnus Mrs. Vijayanthy C.P., Rtd Assistant Director of Agriculture,  C A Gopi (Chairman, Svaztha Ayurveda Wellnes, Kumily),  Sathayanathan Thumboli (Rtd Program Head, AIR) , Chandramathy (Rtd Teacher) and  B. Aravindakshan (New York) shared their experience and thoughts from the seventeens .  Many thanked P K Thampan, the first Principal of the faculty of Agriculture  and K.  Kelappaji, Chairman for their relentless service.    Professors Dr. John Thomas, Dr. George Mathen, P. J. Ittyyavara, M. Balakrishnan were honored with golden shall (ponnada) during the public meeting.  Unneenkutty Pulipra chaired the event.
